Investments and KiwiSaver: how to track them in SortMe

For anyone who wants to see their KiwiSaver, shares, ETFs, or investment accounts (such as Kernel, Sharesies, or InvestNow) in SortMe, whether by connecting them or by adding a balance yourself.

SortMe can track your investments and KiwiSaver in two ways: connect them through Akahu so they update automatically, or add them by hand as a manual asset in Net Worth. This article explains which is which and how to do each.

Which KiwiSaver and investment providers can I connect?

SortMe connects to accounts through Akahu, New Zealand's open banking provider. Many KiwiSaver providers connect this way, including:

ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Westpac (BT Funds), Booster, Fisher Funds, Generate, Kernel, Milford, PIE Funds, Sharesies, and Simplicity.

Some providers cannot be connected through Akahu yet. These include AMP, Craigs, InvestNow, Kōura, Mercer, NZ Funds, Superlife, and others. If your provider is on this second group, you can still track it by adding it as a manual asset (see below).

The list of what connects is maintained by Akahu and can change over time, so the connect screen in SortMe always shows the current options. For general share and ETF investing (for example a Sharesies or InvestNow investment account, rather than KiwiSaver), Akahu's coverage is more limited. If it appears in the connect screen you can link it, and if not, add the balance manually.

How to connect a KiwiSaver or investment account

1. Go to the Growth (Net Worth) page, or your account connection screen.
2. Tap Connect Account and continue through to Akahu.
3. On the provider list, choose your KiwiSaver or investment provider directly.
4. Follow the prompts to log in and approve read-only access.

Once connected, the balance appears in your Net Worth and updates on its own.

My KiwiSaver does not show up under my bank accounts

This is normal. Your KiwiSaver is usually a separate connection from your everyday bank accounts, even when it is with the same company. For example, your BNZ KiwiSaver is not listed under your BNZ transaction accounts. It connects as its own provider.

So if you connected your bank and cannot see your KiwiSaver, go back to Connect Account and choose the KiwiSaver provider itself from the list. If your KiwiSaver provider is not in the list, it is one that Akahu cannot connect yet, so add it as a manual asset instead.

Adding a KiwiSaver or investment as a manual asset

If your provider cannot be connected, or you simply prefer to enter it yourself, add it as a manual asset in Net Worth.

1. Open the Growth (Net Worth) page.
2. Scroll to Assets & Liabilities and tap Add Asset or Liability.
3. Choose the type Equities (this covers KiwiSaver, shares, ETFs, and managed funds).
4. Give it a name (for example "KiwiSaver Generate" or "Sharesies") and enter the Current Value.
5. Tap Save.

Keeping a manual balance up to date

A manual asset does not update by itself, so refresh it now and then (for example each month, or after a contribution):

1. Find the item in your Assets & Liabilities list.
2. Hover over it and tap the $ icon ("Value as of: [date]").
3. Type the new balance and tap Update.

How are KiwiSaver contributions and transfers categorised?

When a KiwiSaver or investment contribution leaves your connected bank account, SortMe treats it as money moving between your own accounts, not as everyday spending. It is categorised as a Transfer (or Investment Transfer), so it does not count against your spending budget. Employer and government contributions that go straight to your KiwiSaver provider do not pass through your bank account, so they will not appear as transactions. They show up as your connected KiwiSaver balance grows.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import my investment holdings from a CSV file?
No. CSV import is only for bank-statement transactions (date, amount, description) that load into an account. It is not a way to import a share portfolio or fund holdings. To track an investment, connect it through Akahu if possible, or add its total value as a manual Equities asset in Net Worth.

Can I track individual shares or company stock?
SortMe tracks the total value of an investment as a manual asset, not each individual share or its live market price. Enter the current total value and update it when you want.

My KiwiSaver is connected but the balance looks out of date.
Connected balances update when your provider sends new data through Akahu, which can be less frequent than a normal bank feed. Give it some time. If it still looks wrong after a few days, email support@sortme.com.
