How to Categorise Transactions in Spend Overview
Categorising uncategorised transactions is essential for maintaining accurate financial records, gaining insights into your spending habits, and creating budgets. This guide will walk you through the steps to categorise uncategorised transactions in SortMe.
Step 1: Access Spend Overview
Navigate to the "Spend Overview" section from the left-hand sidebar.
Step 2: Locate Uncategorised Transactions
In the Spend Overview, click on the "Uncategorized" row at the top of the category list. The right-hand panel will display all transactions that have not yet been assigned a category.
Step 3: Change the Category
Click on any uncategorised transaction in the right-hand panel. A "Change Category" dropdown will appear below the transaction. Use the "Search Categories" field to type and search for the correct category (e.g., typing "pet" will show "Pets and related supplies" under Household). Select the appropriate category and click Save.
Step 4: Choose How to Apply the Category
After selecting a category, a "Change Category" dialog will appear with four options:
- Just this transaction – Apply the category to this single transaction only
- This transaction and all existing transactions with the same description – Re-categorise all past transactions that match
- This transaction and all future transactions with the same description – Automatically categorise matching transactions going forward
- This transaction, existing transactions and all future transactions with the same description – Apply to everything past and future (recommended)
You can also edit the transaction description in this dialog to refine how SortMe matches future transactions. Select your preferred option and click Save.
Completion
The transaction will be moved out of the Uncategorized list and into its new category. The category totals and spend breakdown bar will update automatically to reflect the change.
To streamline the process, SortMe will remember these manually assigned categories the next time it sees a transaction with the same description.
